Fix SRT File Online — Repair Broken Subtitles

A broken SRT usually shows one of these symptoms. Each one points to a small fault in the file, and the check above finds the exact line.

• "Invalid file" or the import fails: a timing line in the wrong format, such as 00:00:01.000 with a dot instead of a comma, missing hours, or text before the first cue.
• Only some captions show, or they stop halfway: a timing line that can't be read, so everything after it is skipped or merged.
• Numbers appear in the captions: a cue is missing the blank line before it, so the next cue's number is read as text.
• Two captions show as one, or captions stack: a missing blank line, or a caption that runs into the next one.
• Captions in the wrong order or flashing: cues out of time order, or captions that end before they start.
• Accents look like "é": the file was saved in the wrong encoding. If whole words are unreadable, use Fix Subtitle Encoding.
• Every caption a little early or late: the file isn't broken; the timing needs moving. Use the Subtitle Delay Fixer.

The one-click repair only makes changes that have a single correct answer:

• Rewrites malformed timing lines as HH:MM:SS,mmm --> HH:MM:SS,mmm. A dot instead of a comma, missing hours, a short -> arrow and semicolons are all read; no time changes.
• Adds missing blank lines between cues, and keeps stray lines of text with the cue they belong to.
• Renumbers cues 1, 2, 3 when numbers are missing, repeated or out of sequence.
• Removes cues with no text, and puts cues back in time order.
• Makes mixed Windows and Unix line endings consistent.
• Restores accents garbled by the wrong encoding when the original letters can be recovered exactly.
• Ends an overlapping caption when the next one starts, only if it still stays on screen at least 0.7 seconds.

An SRT file is plain text made of numbered cues. Each cue is a number, a timing line, one or more lines of text, then a blank line:

1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500
The first caption.

2
00:00:03,800 --> 00:00:06,200
The second caption,
on two lines.

• Cues are numbered from 1, in order.
• Times are hours, minutes, seconds and milliseconds, with a comma before the milliseconds, and an arrow with a space on each side.
• A blank line ends every cue, including the last.
• The file is best saved as UTF-8, so accents and non-Latin letters show correctly everywhere.
